1. Oct 3, 2024Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) refers to deliberate, large-scale actions intended to decrease global average surface temperatures by increasing the reflection of sunlight away from the Earth. Proposed SRM methods involve the use of aerosols (small particles) or other materials to increase the reflectivity of the atmosphere, clouds, or Earth ...

Learn about the potential approaches, benefits, risks and challenges of solar radiation modification (SRM), a group of large-scale methods to limit global warming by reflecting sunlight away from Earth. SRM is a form of climate engineering or geoengineering that could complement, but not replace, emissions reduction and carbon dioxide removal.

Solar radiation management or solar geoengineering is a large category of diverse climate engineering approaches that mitigate or reverse Global Warming by reflecting sunlight (i.e., solar radiation/shortwave radiation) into space before it is absorbed by the environment and converted into heat (i.e., transformed solar radiation, thermal radiation, thermal motion of particles, vibrational ...

Solar radiation management (SRM) is an idea born of desperation. It is also an idea that demands consideration as the global community grapples with an ongoing and accelerating climate crisis. This briefing note defines and describes SRM, discusses why SRM is under consideration by the scientific community, policy actors, and representatives of ...
  5. Jun 14, 2023Solar radiation management (SRM) is a climate engineering approach to reflect sunlight and cool the earth. Learn about the benefits and risks of SRM for insurers, such as unintended climate changes, ecosystem disruption, international conflict and legal uncertainty.

Apr 20, 2024This concept, known as Solar Radiation Management (SRM) raises some profound questions. An SRM program to cool the Earth would require a fleet of planes taking off daily to spray sulfur particles into the upper atmosphere. And that fleet could never stop. If the spraying ever stopped, the continued accumulation of carbon dioxide in the ...

Feb 28, 2023As Andersen noted, solar radiation management is a "complex, controversial and under-studied group of technologies." However, as the need for climate mitigation only increases, more and more scientists are researching and experimenting with the method — even though the potential consequences are unclear.
  8. Oct 22, 2024Solar radiation modification (SRM) is a deliberate intervention into the climate system to temporarily reduce the earth's temperature. Also referred to as solar geoengineering, this idea involves reflecting incoming sunlight back into space. Scientists are exploring a number of methods, including injecting aerosols into the stratosphere and ...

Dec 24, 2024Solar Radiation Management may be a temporary solution to avert catastrophic climate tipping points, giving civilizations more time to shift to low-carbon economies, even though it doesn't lower greenhouse gas concentrations. But putting it into practice would necessitate carefully weighing the geopolitical, ethical, and technical ramifications.

Jul 5, 2023Solar radiation management is a form of climate engineering that aims to reduce global warming by reflecting some of the sun's energy back into space before it can heat up the Earth. SRM is an idea born of desperation, as the world faces an ongoing and accelerating climate crisis that threatens human well-being and planetary health.

    Solar radiation modification

Solar radiation modification, is a group of large-scale approaches to limit global warming by increasing the amount of sunlight that is reflected away from Earth and back to space. Among the potential methods, stratospheric aerosol injection is the most-studied, followed by marine cloud brightening; others such as ground- and space-based methods show less potential or feasibility and receive less attention. SRM could be a supplement to climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, but would not be a substitute for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. SRM is a form of climate engineering or geoengineering. Scientific studies, based on evidence from climate models, have consistently shown that SRM could reduce global warming and many effects of climate change. Wikipedia
